Moondrop named this headphone Old Fashioned for a reason — and they meant it as a compliment. Inspired by the flat on-ear headphones of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the kind that came bundled with the first Walkmans and turned commutes into private concerts, the Old Fashioned is a deliberate return to a format the audio world largely abandoned. It turns out the format was never wrong. It just went out of fashion.

The brushed metal headband carries the name across its length — quiet enough to miss at first, noticeable once you’ve seen it. The ear cups are open-backed, foam-cushioned, the way they always were, and the transparent driver housing lets you see the 40mm dynamic unit doing its work inside. The orange Moondrop badge is the only colour in an otherwise monochrome object. It earns its place.

Sonically, the Old Fashioned is honest. The 40mm dynamic driver covers the full 20–20,000Hz range without exaggeration — no artificially boosted bass, no scooped mids. At 32Ω impedance, it runs comfortably from a phone or laptop without needing an amplifier. Plug it in via 3.5mm, press play, and it simply gets on with it.

There is no Bluetooth here, no noise cancellation, no app to configure. The inline control handles volume — nothing more, nothing less. In a world of overspecified headphones, that restraint feels almost radical.

It pairs naturally with a turntable, a CD player, or a laptop on a desk. It leaves the house flat in a bag. It comes back having done exactly what it was asked to do.
